Our Moʻolelo
In 2023, Michele Navarro Ishiki founded Piha Wellness and Healing with the intention to provide vital emotional support and mental health services to our community, and a vision for every home to be healed. The devastating wildfires on Maui served as a catalyst, reinforcing the urgent need for more services in the community. When the community called for action Piha, in partnership with private and public services, took on a major role during this time to ensure that first responders were receiving support, while also offering support for the immediate needs of the community impacted by the wildfires in Lāhaina.
As we navigate the challenges ahead, our unwavering faith in the power of healing drives us forward. Every person touched by Piha becomes a testament to the transformative potential of compassion and community support. With hearts united in service, they embark on a journey of healing, knowing that their collective efforts will leave an indelible mark on the fabric of their beloved Maui.
Despite limited resources, Piha’s initiatives serve a substantial number of clients; however, the demand for services far outweighs the current capacity, indicating a pressing need for expansion and additional funding. With adequate support, Piha envisions a broader reach, thereby addressing the critical need for mental health and substance use services in the community.
A key aspect of Piha’s approach is the recognition and empowerment of individuals at various stages of qualification. Peer support specialists play a vital role in navigating and advocating for individuals, complemented by professionals with undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications who offer counseling and therapeutic interventions. Piha emphasizes the importance of valuing everyone’s contribution, regardless of formal credentials, thereby fostering a supportive environment that maximizes community resources.
